Unlike architectural paintings, smaller landscape paintings are done from a less detailed drawing, as shown here. I aim to block in my canvas so no white is showing. From there, I build up forms, trying to keep my values correct relative to each other.
Decisions are made more quickly as light is rapidly changing. At times I need several sessions with the same lighting conditions to complete these works, so I may have more than one painting underway at a time.
I still use a rather limited palette but in the past few years I have mostly stopped using cadmium paints.
My new palette (which I am asked about sometimes) typically includes:
White
Azo Yellow
Yellow Ochre
Ultramarine Blue
Quinacridone Red
Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide
Transparent Red Iron Oxide
Turquoise
For this painting I used a limited palette:
White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Chartreuse
Quinacridone Red
Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide
Transparent Red Iron Oxide
Turquoise
